At the end of the 18th century, an unusual event happened to a French breeder: a pair of large blue Gascon hounds gave birth to short-legged puppies bassets, which means “low”. The owner was not at a loss and decided to make an experiment he began the selection of undersized dogs.
For the first time, blue bassets were shown to the general public at a dog show held in Paris in 1863. Interestingly, they were originally considered exclusively companion dogs. Only with time did it become clear that bassets are good hunters. Since then, their selection and education as hounds began.

A small basset is an unpretentious pet. He easily adapts to changes and is not afraid of the new, it is pleasant to travel with him.
However, the Blue Gascony Basset can be tenacious and independent. Some representatives are very independent, they do not tolerate familiar attitude towards themselves. What a dog will be depends not only on its character, but also on education.
Bassets are not that hard to train. Respect for the pet and reasonable perseverance is the main thing in this matter. It will be difficult for a beginner to raise a well-bred Gascon blue basset, so it is still best to entrust the training process to a professional. Especially if in the future you plan to take the dog with you to hunt. Breeders often note that Bassets are able to make almost anyone laugh. But representatives of the breed behave so freely only when surrounded by close people.
The Blue Gascony Basset is patient with children. The main thing is that the child knows the rules of behavior with pets. Then there will be no conflicts.
As for the animals in the house, then, as a rule, there are no problems here. Bassets work in a pack, so it will not be difficult for them to find a common language with a relative.
Care
The short coat of the dog does not require much effort from the owner. Only during the molting period, it is necessary to comb the pet a couple of times a week to get rid of the fallen hairs.
Conditions of detention
Blue Gascon baskets can become a city resident, provided that sufficient physical exertion. The dog needs daily long walks with running and all kinds of exercises. Regular exercise will help her.
It is worth saying that the Gascon Basset is a southern dog. In winter, when it’s very cold outside, he needs clothes. But in hot weather it feels great!
When getting a dog of this breed, remember that the Gascon Basset is still a food lover. Therefore, you should especially carefully compose the pet’s diet and not succumb to its numerous attempts to beg for a treat.
