Bulgarian Shepherd an ancient breed. It has existed since the time of the Thracians, and may have existed even earlier. Figurines of dogs that look like shepherd dogs were found during excavations of ancient treasures.

The second name of the breed Karakachan dog comes from the name of the Karakachan tribe. They still live on the territory of modern Bulgaria, Greece and Macedonia. The traditional occupation of the Karakachans is cattle breeding, and large black-and-white shepherd dogs help them in this. They tend sheep and protect them from wild animals and thieves. In Bulgaria, the sex of the dog is marked in a special way: only the left ear is stopped for females, and only the right ear for males.

The Bulgarian Shepherd is a serious dog that does not tolerate familiarity and excessive tenderness. She is not inclined to show emotions, especially in relation to unfamiliar people. And yes, it’s a one owner dog. She remains faithful and devoted to one family member.

Interestingly, representatives of this breed are naturally intelligent and aristocratic. But, despite this, the dog still needs to be educated, and it is necessary to socialize the pet as early as possible. In the birthplace of the breed, in Bulgaria, these dogs live in a pack and are socialized at a very early age, adopting the behavior and habits of older comrades. In the conditions of the city with a pet, it is advisable to work with a cynologist. The breed is independent and even proud.

The Bulgarian Shepherd Dog has excellent working qualities: it is wary of strangers, but does not show aggression. In general, this is a very calm dog that is able to assess the situation and make decisions on its own.

As you might expect, Bulgarian Shepherds don’t need a human much. In the absence of the owner, they will find something to their liking. If the pet knows the rules of the house, he will never gnaw on wallpaper or furniture legs.

Bulgarian Shepherds, like many large dogs, are very loyal to children. They can endure children’s games and fun for a long time without raising their voices. The Bulgarian Shepherd Dog is neutral towards animals, does not show aggression with early socialization.

The Bulgarian Shepherd Dog, although able to live in the city, still feels much better in the countryside. It is understandable: these dogs are happy in freedom and large open spaces. It is in the village that they do not lose their working qualities.

The Karakachan Shepherd will make an excellent working dog. But it is important to remember that it is by no means impossible to put it on a chain.
