Disposal of batteries is an acute problem of our society that is not enough to spend enough attention. In many innovative countries, this problem has already been solved. However, a very small number of people of our country pays due attention to the disposal and processing of harmful items of mass use. Each citizen needs to know about the importance of the disposal of batteries after operation, their impact on the environment and human health.

Why dispose of batteries?

The damage to the batteries begins after they fall into the garbage bucket or are simply thrown out on the street. Ecologists are outraged by people’s irresponsibility to their own health, since the destructive battery shell begins to secrete harmful substances, such as:

  • mercury;
  • lead;
  • nickel;
  • cadmium.
  • These chemical compounds during the decomposition:

  • ground and underground waters fall into the soil;
  • At the water supply station, harmful substances can be cleansed, but it is impossible to completely eliminate them from the liquid;
  • The accumulated poison, along with water, affects fish and other river residents, whom we eat in food;
  • When burning at special processing plants, batteries distinguish more active chemicals, they fall into the air and penetrate into plants and light animals and humans.
  • The greatest danger from burning or decomposition of batteries is that when chemical compounds are accumulated in the human body, they increase the risk of cancer, and also affect the health of the fetus during pregnancy.

    Where to put batteries after use?

    It will not work to independently dispose of the used material. In large cities of our country there are special reception points that take on the disposal of nutrition elements. Most often, the points of reception of used batteries are in shopping points in stores. It is possible to hand over batteries in a large IKEA retail network. It is very inconvenient to wear one battery at the reception points, so you can simply put them off until the accumulation of 20-30 pieces.

    Disposal technology

    Thanks to modern technologies, the disposal of one batch of batteries takes 4 days. The processing of the nutrition element includes such general stages:

    1. Initially, manual sorting of raw materials occurs depending on the type of battery.
    2. In a special crusher, a party of products is crushed.
    3. Crushed material enters the magnetic line, which separates large elements from small.
    4. Large details are sent for repeated crushing.
    5. Small raw materials need to be neutralized.
    6. Raw materials are divided into separate components.

    The process of disposal of the material itself is very costly, it is produced in large factories. Unfortunately, in the countries of the former Soviet Union there are very few factories for processing such a harmful product. There are special batteries, but over many years the premises have been fully filled.

    The experience of European countries

    In the European Union, the problem of the disposal of batteries is not so acute. In almost every store and even at the enterprises there are containers for collecting a spent material. For processing plants, spending on the processing of material is in advance, so this cost is already in the price of new products.

    In the USA, reception points are immediately in stores for the sale of such goods. Up to 65% of the products are disposed of annually in the country, responsibility for this has the distributors and sellers of goods. The processing of the material is financed by manufacturers of batteries. The most modern processing methods occur in Japan and Australia.


    Our society pays little attention to the problem of the disposal of batteries. One battery has not passed utilization can harm 20 square soil meters. Harmful chemicals fall into water, which everyone uses through water supply systems. In the absence of proper disposal, the likelihood of developing cancer and congenital pathologies increases. Each of us should take care of the health of the future generation and promote the processing of batteries after their operation.
