Flying fish differ from others in that they not only know how to jump out of the water, but also fly a few meters above its surface. This is possible, thanks to the special form of fins. In a detailed state, they act like wings and allow the fish to soar for some time above the surface of the water.
What flying fish look like?
In water, flying fish is not something unusual. This is a classic fish in a gray-blue color, sometimes with barely noticeable dark stripes. The upper body is darker. Interesting coloring can have fins. Unlike a subspecies, they are transparent, colorful, blue, blue and even green.
Why flying fish fly?
The main “trick” of this type of fish is in their ability to jump out of the water and perform a soaring flight above its surface. Moreover, in various subspecies, mortal functions are developed unequal. Someone flies higher and further, and someone makes very short flights.
In general, flying fish are able to rise above the water to a height to five meters. Flight range 50 meter. However, there are cases when, relying on the rising air streams, like a bird, a flying fish flew a distance of up to 400 meters! A serious drawback of fish flight is the lack of controllability. Flying fish fly exclusively in a straight line and are unable to deviate from the course. As a result of this, they periodically die, running into the rocks, sides of the ships and other obstacles.
Fish flight is possible thanks to the special structure of its breast fins. In a detailed state, they are two large planes, which, when air flow, lift the fish up. In some subspecies, other fins are also involved in flight, which are also adapted to work in the air.
The start of fish from water provides a powerful tail. Accelerating from the depths to the surface, flying fish makes strong tail strokes on the water, helping with wriggling movements of the body. Many species of fish jump out from the water about the same way, but in volatile varieties, jumping into the air continues to fly.
Habitat of flying fish
Most of the flying fish live in tropics and subtropics. Ideal water temperature: 20 degrees Celsius above zero. There are more than 40 species of flying fish that are common in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Red and Mediterranean Seas.
Flying fish can make quite long nomads. Thanks to this, they appear in the territorial waters of Eurasia. For example, cases of fishing fishing in the Far East have been noted.
All representatives of this species live in small flocks at a small depth. The remoteness of the habitat from the coast is highly dependent on a specific subspecies. Some representatives hold on the coast, others prefer open water. Flying feed in mainly crustaceans, plankton and fish larvae.
Flying fish and man
Fishes from the species of flying have gastronomic value. Their meat is distinguished by a delicate structure and a pleasant taste. Therefore, in many countries they are mined as a seafood. Catching flying fish is carried out nonstandard. As a bait, not classic bait is used, but light. Like butterflies, flying fish sail to a bright light source where they are removed from the water with nets, or other technical means are used.
The most widespread fishing of flying fish is in Japan. Here, the famous caviar Tobico is made from it, and the meat is used in land and other classic Japanese dishes.
