Ecosystems are considered freshwater if they contain less than 1% salt. A wide variety of organisms live in and near these reservoirs. The type of habitat and species of freshwater ecosystem animals found there depends on the amount of water and the speed at which it flows. Fast-flowing streams and rivers are preferred by some species, lakes and slow-moving rivers by others, and swamps by still others. The freshwater biome provides a habitat for macro and micro-organisms that interact in complex ways. Freshwater ecosystems are always full of living creatures, but each of them has its own special collection of species that feels comfortable there.
