The ancestors of the lagders are considered to be Foxster, whom at the beginning of the 20th century they began to breed as dogs of show class, which led to a deterioration in their hunting qualities. The German lagderer was an attempt by breeders to return to the dog the characteristics necessary for Norny Hunting, while the exterior was fading into the background. So these fearless, stubborn and strong dogs appeared faithful watchmen and tireless hunters.
First of all, the Jagd Terrier is a hunter, so he will definitely look for adventures on a walk. Keeping dogs of this breed in the same house with birds, mice and other small animals can turn into big problems. There are chances for peaceful coexistence with another dog or cat, but animals must be accustomed to each other gradually.
Jagdterriers are distrustful of strangers. Despite their small size, these dogs are excellent watchdogs. Two Jagd Terriers are quite enough for reliable protection of a country house.
The German Jagd Terrier is not an easy dog. The breed is distinguished by mobility, courage, stubbornness and strong will.
These dogs are very playful. However, in the family they recognize one owner, and this must be an experienced and strong person, able to competently train and train the dog. A strong-willed and intelligent Jagd Terrier will not obey a nervous, weak-willed or cruel owner.
Care
Due to the short hard coat, which perfectly repels dirt and dust, it is not necessary to bathe and comb the dog often. Usually done as needed. It is better to use a special shampoo and brush for terriers.
Eyes and teeth should be cleaned regularly. Nails usually grind down naturally, but if this does not happen, then they need to be trimmed once a month.
Do not forget about the treatment of the pet with special means from ticks. With long walks in nature, this is a vital necessity: these parasites carry deadly diseases for dogs, in particular piroplasmosis.
It is not worth letting the dog off the leash in public places: in the heat of the hunt, the dog can get hit by a car. In addition, the dog is aggressive towards strangers and animals and can scare passers-by and children.
Conditions of detention
Representatives of this breed are unpretentious in content and have good health. One of the basic needs of these dogs is long walks, whether you keep them in an apartment or in an aviary. You need to walk twice a day for an hour or two. The load at the same time should be high: jogging, active games, training. With insufficient activity, the dog becomes prone to aggression, he needs an energy release, and this can have devastating consequences.
The German Jagd Terrier feels best in an aviary located in the courtyard of a country house. If the dog is forced to live in an apartment, then its place should be removed from heating appliances and doors. Otherwise, the dog will become susceptible to colds.
Jagdterrier is best suited for active people with experience in dealing with hunting terriers. These dogs are very active even at a mature and older age, so they require long walks throughout their lives.
