Character

The first mention of a large Braque Francais dates back to the 15th century. And his ancestors are considered to be the now extinct southern hound and the Navarre patch on the old Spanish pointer.

It is interesting that for a long time the breeding of the Braque Français was not controlled in any way, the dogs were taken to different regions and crossed with other breeds. At the end of the 19th century, breeders decided to engage in the conscious selection of these animals. It turned out that by this time two types of Braque had formed the Pyrenean and the Gascon. Their standards were described in 1880.

A large Braque Francais does not survive separation from his beloved owner. Left alone, the dog becomes nervous, uncontrollable, becomes discouraged. Such a pet is hardly suitable for a busy person.

Despite the boundless devotion, the Braque Français need training and socialization. If the owner does not have experience in raising a dog, experts recommend immediately contacting a cynologist. Some representatives of the breed are restless, inattentive, and can be easily distracted from their studies.

The Braque Francais has strong hunting instincts, making it not the best neighbor for cats and other small animals. But with dogs, he easily finds a common language.

Care

The short, dense coat of the Great Braque Français is replaced twice a year in autumn and spring. At this time, dogs are combed a couple of times a week, no more.

The rest of the time, you need to wipe the pet with a wet hand or towel once a week this is enough to remove the fallen hairs.

It is also recommended to carefully examine and clean your pet’s teeth and ears once a week, and monitor the condition of the claws.

Conditions of detention

The Greater Braque Francais is a free-spirited dog that needs daily active outdoor walks, like all representatives of hunting breeds. Therefore, the owner must be prepared for the fact that he will have to spend a lot of time on the street all year round.

It is also advisable to take your pet outdoors at least once a week, for example, to the forest. This will allow the dog to run outdoors, play and throw out his energy. The main thing is to control so that, carried away by something, the pet does not run away and does not get lost. Hunting instincts in animals persist even if they are taken as companions, and they have never participated in a real hunt.
