Hungarian mangalita description of the breed, photo and features of Pig Mangalits

For most farmers who decided to engage in pig breeding, the main task is to correctly choose an object of breeding, t.e. breeds. And here it all depends on the desired results and existing resources: for example, there are pigs of a bacon type (meat direction, like a landrass), giving lowfat pork, there are many other breeds (the same Mirgorodskaya) sebaceous and meat and suicide. The Hungarian barbecue also includes sebaceous breeds.

Description of the breed

Hungarian Mangalitsa rightfully occupies a special place among the rare and exotic rocks of the greenhouse after all, it is recognized as an almost disappeared breed, which only now began to recover a little. Such a pig will become not only a worthy decoration of the courtyard, but is also able to bring decent income to those who are engaged in the breeding of this breed.

The main thing is a distinctive feature of the mangalita, by which it is easy to recognize it among any other breeds is a thick and very curly hair, which in its structure resembles a sheep. The only breed of all known, which possessed similar characteristics, was the Lincolnshire Curlehaired breed from England that disappeared today.

Due to its origin and unusual appearance, this breed received many names wool, downy or furry, curly, sheep and other interesting nicknames.

Story

The Hungarian breed of mangalitz from domestic pigs was known two centuries ago by crossing the Hungarian breed from the European and Serbian Shumali breed.

Mangalitsa was withdrawn in 1833 the honor of its excretion belongs to the Archduke Joseph from Hungary, where to this day this breed has the largest number (today it is seven thousand piglets, giving the livestock about 60 thousand piglets a year). The Archduke was presented by a dozen sows and several boars from Prince Tolchider from furry semiwild Serbian pigs of pigs. And only then Hungarian breeders began to cross their offspring to remove the breed. And finally the mangalita took shape by 1860 in its modern form.

This pig gained mass distribution in the Carpathians until the middle of the last century and then totaled at least 30 thousand heads grown in the juicy meadows of Carpathia.

Since 1927, when a special association of mangalitsa breeders was created, which was engaged in improving the breed, its popularity increased significantly. However, after 1950, the fashion for the barbecue began to decrease, since the demand for meat breeds increased. And the number of this species began to decline and began to say about the disappearance of the breed.

By 90 years of the last century, only two hundred signs of barbecues remained in Hungary and this continued until their restoration was engaged in Monte Nevado from Spain. Pigs were introduced in Serbia (1998) on the ambush, where they were released for free maintenance. By the beginning of 2010, their number in this Serbian village and other small farms in the district had already reached thousands of heads. And since other original Serbian pigs of pigs died out, it is the Mangalitsa who is considered the only pigeon species preserved in Serbia.

And in 2016, the general director of Monrte Nevado was even awarded a special officer cross for merits to Hungary.

Appearance

Representatives of this curly breed of pigs have a very characteristic appearance that distinguishes them from all pairedchosen ones and it is simply unrealistic to confuse them with any other type.

Mangalitsa is a mediumsized owner and a dense skeleton with a strong constitution. She was still lucky to get a luxurious thick and quite long wool. Which perfectly protects these pigs in the cold.  And it is in winter that the mangalitz is very reminiscent of the sheep especially from afar. Supplies, of course, disappears with warming, and thick stubble turns from twisted rings. The characteristic features of representatives of the purebred breed are the dark color of the skin around the eyes and nose (patch), and necessarily a dark spot located on the lower part of the ears.

Mangalitsa does not affect in size adult representatives of this species reach about three hundred kilograms of living weight. Moreover, in one year of life, they are at least 160 kg.

The down pig is distinguished by voluminous breasts, impressive stomach and medium sizes groin. The back of this breed is even, sometimes with a slight deflection. Mediumsized head the patch is bent, and the ears are quite large, deployed forward. Sows have a dozen nipples no more.

Eyes, eyelashes, lips, nipples, the inside of the tail should be in any case black, regardless of color this is a sign of purity of the breed. But the tail brushes are usually white.

It is characteristic that the sows of the mangalitsa become capable of propagation very late almost after the year of life. And the first relying brings not great offspring only seven piglets, but in the following times the nest can increase to 12 babies.

By the type of color, it is customary to distinguish 4 subspecies of this Hungarian pig: white, red and black with white (the socalled swallows), as well as their varieties of a mixed type. Moreover, what is characteristic that today the vast majority of representatives of this breed (up to 80%) are the owners of white wool.

Black and red barbecues are still related to the disappearing look their number is gradually restoring however, specialists are working on this, and today to purchase a magnetic man of this color is a problematic task. Individuals obtained by crossing the Hungarian breed with other representatives and species are usually on sale and with further breeding, these animals can cause a deterioration in the breed.

Characterization of the breed

The breed of the Hungarian mangalita is focused on the receipt of fat, and the meat of these pigs has a special taste. All together makes products obtained from this animal (both meat and sebaceous), a real delicacy that is recognized as such throughout the world.

And the traditional Spanish Hamon a raw hakor is made precisely from the pigs of this Hungarian breed. And a kilogram of this delicacy made according to ancient recipes will cost about 4 thousand rubles, and a whole ham of Hamon will cost several tens of thousands.

Moreover, on the manifestation of all the main features of the breed, the close relationship of these pigs with wild boars played a special role (an indicator of up to 40 percent of the genotype was revealed here). It is interesting that the piglet pigs are born as striped as the kids in the wild. This breed is characterized by a high test of endurance for example, they can perfectly remember the way home and. Hungarian shepherds to this day expel the barbecue from the whole village to a grazing without any fear. In this regard, such pigs do not need separate rooms in the cold season it is enough for the farmer to organize a roof over the head of animals that protects against precipitation and wind. And with year-round grazing “in nature”, pigs simply dig their own burns in the ground, where they hide in the cold.

What eats

In the event that the pigs are not on free grazing, the farmer should bother about the right diet for his economy. The diet of mangalitsa should consist in most of the grass and juicy types of feed (about 70%), and only for a third part can consist of concentrates.

Ideal grass for Hungarian pigs can be safely called alfalfa this type of grass contains a sufficient amount of protein and calcium. In winter, it is normal to feed these pigs with hay and root crops.

The share of concentrates in the stern for pigs is distributed as follows:

  • Makukha soy or sunflower (15%);
  • crushed corn grain (20%);
  • barley (40%);
  • wheat (10%);
  • bran (10%);
  • flour either meatbone or fish (5%).
  • If Hungarian pigs are fed enough intensively (potatoes combined with grain) t.e. a diet that is familiar to the usual breeds of pigs then they very quickly begin to gain weight (about 200 kg per year). But in this situation, they quickly gain fat mass and lose that unique composition of the product (including the ratio of meat and fat in it), which is the main characteristic feature of the breed.

    These pigs are able to gain weight perfectly, and exclusively on leaf stern, without any additives. Those. To organize a farm with mangalits, it is enough to be the owner of a site for walking or organize the ability to feed your economy with fresh grass or hay.

    And for additional top dressing for feeding Hungarian downy pigs, it is permissible to use potatoes (both in cheese and boiled format), as well as other vegetables zucchini, pumpkin, beets, pants and root crops.

    For representatives of this breed, it is very important to have a sufficient amount of pure water in free access this must be taken into account in the content of this breed.

    The content of the mangalita

    The Hungarian breed of pigs can be called very attractive in terms of breeding and organizing their farm. These pigs are not afraid of low temperatures and are very unpretentious to the conditions of detention.

    Everything that will be required for the acquisition of representatives of this breed is a spacious area that will be planted with highquality grass for further grazing these beauties. The farmer should take care of restricting the access of wild animals, stray dogs, enclosing a place for grazing. It is necessary to organize special protective awnings so that it would be easier for pigs to hide from the scorching sun or bad weather.

    Mangals are able to calmly winter even in a haystack, but the dazzic owner will not neglect the opportunity to build a warm pigsty in order to be able to enjoy a long and unpromising content of the farm. Any, even the most hardy animal prefers the litter of snow and frozen ground.

    These animals reach their killer weight by the year and it is usually customary to prepare sausage in a natural shell from Hungarian downy meat, generously flavored with special Hungarian spices.  In Hungary, it is customary to cut this sausage with slices and serve in combination with pickled vegetables. Do not neglect farmers and the production of smoked ham.

    Breeding mangalitsa

    It must be understood that such a breed of pigs is not intended for growing in conditions of huge industrial scale these animals in their genetics are prone to nomadic gravy and are simply not able to live in a limited space.

    And their main advantage marble pork can be obtained only thanks to the free movement of animals on natural grazing. And it is good to feel barbecue only on a halfborn yearold time. Such a breeding technology will provide environmentally friendly products that are useful for humans-and very, very tasty. Mangalitan meat is a special taste and aroma it is necessary to try it!

    Moreover, both Hamon, and other types of mangalitsa products prepared using special technologies are in demand in the meat market and cost good money. Despite the fact that the meat market is now oversaturated with products all of it is not very high quality in view of industrial cultivation, and it is the Hungarian pig that is favorably different against its background with its quality and taste.

    It is ideal to organize the pasture of these pigs in a wooded area so that the barbecue has the opportunity to independently get food for herself. Such a farm organization is ideal for small and mediumsized farms.

    In his homeland, the Hungarian downy pig has long been recognized as a national treasure and the whole public of the country with addiction monitors its breeding. Despite the period of oblivion and almost complete disappearance, today the barbecue is gaining more and more popularity, and outside her homeland.
