12–14 years old
The German Langhaar appeared as an independent breed in the 19th century. Then they were powerful and heavy dogs. They were mainly used in hunting large game. However, in the 20th century, the preferences of German hunters changed they needed a light and graceful assistant. Then it was decided to cross the Langhaar with the Irish and Scottish Setters. The experiments were successful: today this dog is especially valued for agility, maneuverability and speed.
Until now, representatives of the breed are rarely started as companions. Yet most of their owners are professional hunters. The highest pleasure for a dog of this breed is to accompany the owner on the hunt.
The characteristic qualities of langhaar are intelligence and nobility. Sometimes it may even seem that the dog is behaving coldly and indifferently. But this is not so, in fact, langhaar is quite a friendly and sociable dog. He treats all family members with love and is especially attached to children. However, the owner still remains the main thing for him, the dog will be infinitely devoted to him.
Developed in langhaar and protective qualities. He is distrustful of strangers, although he does not show aggression, he only barks loudly, notifying the entire neighborhood. As soon as the dog understands that a new person for her does not pose a threat, there will be no trace of coldness.
Representatives of the breed treat children with understanding. It is impossible to call dogs 100% nannies, but they are ready to endure a lot. The child should explain the rules of behavior with animals so that he himself does not provoke the dog into conflict situations.
Langhaar’s friendliness extends to literally everyone, including animals living in the neighborhood, even cats. The dog is absolutely non-confrontational, and the most cocky neighbor is unlikely to be able to piss her off.
Langhaar is easy to care for. The long coat of the dog is combed out once a week with a stiff comb. During the molting period, which occurs in autumn and spring, the procedure must be carried out more often 2-3 times a week.
It is important to keep the coat clean: after walking, the pet should be carefully examined, especially during the flowering period of plants. Dirt and stuck thorns can cause tangles that are difficult to get rid of.
It is also necessary to carefully monitor the eyes, teeth and especially hanging ears. Breeds with this type of ear are more likely to suffer from otitis media and ear infections.
Conditions of detention
The Langhaar is an active and free-spirited breed. He will be cramped in a city apartment. But if the owner is ready to walk the pet for a long time 2-3 times a day, keep him busy with games, running and fetching, then there will be no problems. It is recommended to periodically take the dog out of the city so that it can warm up and run in the fresh air.
