The “bottle tree” got its name thanks to the similarity of the barrel in shape with a bottle. In fact, they include about 30 different plants of the family, agave, kutovy and lilies.
The most common view in our region is Nolina a very original plant comes from Mexico, which in the wild can reach one and a half meters in height. This is a very heatloving culture that accumulates water in the trunk, in this way adapted to experience the long periods of drought. Unusual appearance and unpretentiousness in care, made this tree popular among lovers of indoor plants.
Description
Nolina, or a bottle tree is a perennial plant of the agave family, with a domed crown and a rounded barrel. In a natural environment, this is a shrub or tree. Has oblong gray-green leaves. It takes root well in moderate-dry soil. Loves light and high temperatures. It grows very slowly. The average height reaches 30-60 cm. after several years, in rare cases 1500 cm. The homeland is South Mexico, the southern regions of the United States.
The wood barrel is used by the plant as a reservoir hence its characteristic volumetric shape. Clushes of herbaceous leaves appear from its upper sprouts resembling a horse tail. Sometimes they can reach 90 cm. Only old plants throw flowers.
Bottle tree cultivation
In order to grow nolins seedlings, the seeds are placed in warm water for three, four hours. Then they are sown on a permeable substrate in fertilized soil to a depth of 0.5 cm. Soil for cacti is well suited, with the addition of minerals. Next, a container or pot with seeds is placed in a dry and warm place. The temperature of +250C is ideal, at which the plant will feel as comfortable as possible. Water should be watered in moderate quantities. In a few weeks, with proper care, you will notice the first seedlings.
Nolina care at home
Nolina, or bottle tree is a rather unpretentious plant. Therefore, you will not feel special trouble when caring for it. In the warm season, it is recommended to keep it on the terrace, in the garden or on the windowsill, but certainly on the sunny side and in the warm room. You should also ensure that the tree is not exposed to strong wind or draft.
There must be drainage in a pot or container. A feature of watering is the fact that the plant is not moistureloving. It is precisely why, before irrigating the soil, you should make sure that it is dry enough. In the summer, watering is carried out more often, in winter no more than 1-2 times a month.
Когда корневая система нолина сильно вырастает, его следует пересадить в новый горшок, который должен быть на порядок больше, чем предыдущий. Nolins do not like substrates that contribute to the accumulation of moisture, because they do not have this in their natural environment. Therefore, for their planting, prepare a light and permeable soil mixture suitable for succulents and cacti.

Diseases, pests and other problems
If you notice that the leaves of your plant are slightly twisted do not worry, this is their typical feature. Nevertheless, if you notice that the tips of the leaves have dried up, or brown spots appeared on them, analyze what could have provoked their appearance? There may be several reasons:

In the case of minor errors when leaving, you can easily fix them, but if the plant, for example, was flooded with water, this may become a problem. The soil should be immediately drained, otherwise the tree may die.
The problem is also very dry air and high temperature, since they can provoke the appearance of spider mites on the leaves. For treatment and to avoid this, appropriate products to protect plants should be used.
Compliance with completely noncomplex rules will allow you to admire for a long time as unusual decoration as Nolina.
