Character
Norwegian Gray Elkhund is the real pride of Norway. Bred in the second half of the 19th century, these dogs were used mainly for hunting large game, including elk. This is evidenced by the name of the breed: in Norwegian it sounds like elghund, elg “moose”, hund “dog”. But they went with these dogs to a lynx, a bear, and even small game. This is a versatile hunting breed.
For the outstanding abilities and pleasant character of the Norwegian Gray Elkhund, not only huntsmen, but also ordinary dog lovers are highly valued. Smart, loyal and brave pets quickly become attached to the family, treat all members of their “pack” with love and understanding.
Nevertheless, the owner for them is the only leader. Only his dog will obey implicitly. However, the respect of the pet must be earned. Proud and independent, Norwegian Elkhunds are by nature true leaders, so if the owner does not show his strength, the dog will consider himself the head of the family and behave accordingly.
This character trait largely determines both the upbringing of a pet and its training. Breeders advise owners to be strict but fair. At the same time, in no case should you raise your hand to the dog, you can achieve what you want only with love and patience.
The Norwegian Gray Elkhund can get along with relatives who are ready to give way to the leader. With cocky and aggressive dogs that are not able to compromise, he is unlikely to find a common language.
Norwegian Elkhund is easy on children. The attitude towards the child will depend on the upbringing of the pet. If the puppy grew up with the baby, there will be no problems. But if the child appeared in a family where there is already a dog, you will have to work hard and explain to her that the new family member does not claim her place in the hierarchy.
Care
Norwegian Gray Elkhund the owner of a thick coat with an undercoat. The potential owner should be prepared for surprises in the form of fallen pieces of wool scattered throughout the apartment. Daily combing of the dog with a stiff brush will help to reduce their number.
By the way, the Elkhund is bathed infrequently 2-3 times a year, according to the recommendation of the American Kennel Club.
Conditions of detention
A free-ranger, the Norwegian Elkhund needs regular and long walks in nature. In the city, the dog feels quite comfortable, but only if the owner takes it at least a couple of times a week to the forest or to the park, where the pet can run around.
Daily walking should last at least two to three hours. It is useful for a pet to offer all kinds of active entertainment and exercises, this will help the dog to keep fit and stay healthy.
