Pollution of the hydrosphere sources and consequences of pollution briefly

The hydrosphere is not only the water surface of the earth, but also groundwater. Rivers, lakes, oceans, seas together form the oceans. It occupies much more space of our planet than land. Basically, the composition of the hydrosphere includes mineral compounds that make it salty. On Earth there is a small supply of fresh water suitable for drinking.

Most of the hydrosphere is made up of oceans:

  • Indian;
  • Quiet;
  • Arctic;
  • Atlantic.
  • The longest river in the world is the Amazon. The Caspian Sea is considered the largest lake in terms of area. As for the seas, the Philippine has the largest area, it is also considered the deepest.

    Sources of pollution of the hydrosphere

    The main problem is pollution of the hydrosphere. Experts name the following sources of water pollution:

  • industrial enterprises;
  • housing and communal services;
  • transportation of oil products;
  • agricultural agrochemistry;
  • transport system;
  • tourism.
  • Ocean pollution by oil

    Now let’s talk more about specific incidents. As for the oil industry, during the extraction of raw materials, small oil leaks occur from the seas. This is not as catastrophic as oil spills during tankers accidents. In this case, the oil spot covers a huge area. Residents of reservoirs are suffocating because oil does not let in oxygen. Fish, birds, mollusks, dolphins, whales, as well as other living creatures die, algae die out. Dead zones are formed at the site of the oil spill, moreover, the chemical composition of water changes, and it becomes unsuitable for any needs of people.

    The largest catastrophes of pollution of the oceans:

  • 1979. about 460 tons of oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico, and the consequences were eliminated in about a year;
  • 1989. a tanker ran aground off the coast of Alaska, nearly 48,000. tons of oil, a huge oil slick formed, and 28 species of fauna were on the verge of extinction;
  • 2000. oil spilled in Brazil’s bay about 1.3 million liters, which led to a largescale environmental disaster;
  • 2007. In the Kerch Strait, several judges sat agitated, received damage, and some sank, sulfur and fuel oil spilled, which led to the death of hundreds of populations of birds and fish.
  • These are not the only cases, there were many large and medium disasters that have caused significant damage to the ecosystems of the seas and oceans. Nature will need many decades to recover.

    Pollution of rivers and lakes

    Lakes and rivers flowing on the continent suffer from anthropogenic activity. Literally every day, uncleaned household and industrial drains drop into them. Mineral fertilizers and pesticides also enter the water. All this leads to the fact that the water areas are oversaturated with minerals, which contribute to the active growth of algae. They, in turn, consume a huge amount of oxygen, occupy the habitats of fish and river animals. It can even lead to the death of ponds and lakes. Unfortunately, the surface waters of the land are also exposed to chemical, radioactive, biological pollution of rivers, which occurs through the fault of man.

    Water resources are the wealth of our planet, perhaps the most numerous. And even this huge stock people managed to bring to a worse state. The chemical composition, the atmosphere of the hydrosphere, and the inhabitants of rivers, seas, oceans suffer, and the boundaries of water bodies change. Only people are able to help clean up aquatic systems in order to save many water areas from destruction. For example, the Aral Sea is on the verge of extinction, and other bodies of water await its fate. By preserving the hydrosphere, we will save the life of many species of flora and fauna, as well as leave water supplies to our descendants.
