They discovered the breed in the XX century in the mountainous region of Sierra de Aires. By the way, its Portuguese name sounds CãO DA Serra de Aires. Experts suggest that it is associated with the Pyrenee and Catalan shepherds, which look like it.

    Another theory says that at the beginning of the 20th century, French Briars were brought to Portugal, these dogs were considered excellent shepherds. However, the features of the climate and the terrain did not allow the animals to reveal their potential, so that the breeders crossed Briara with local shepherd dogs perhaps all with the same Pyrenee and Catalan rocks. And at the exit they received a Portuguese shepherd.
