  • The story of the breed

According to the official version, the country of the origin of the breed is China. Scientists suggest that it originated in the 5th century BC and came from miniature mastiffs.

A characteristic short and wide shape of the skull could be due to mutations that arose as a result of inbreeding, often practiced in the past.

In Europe, they appeared in the 16th century, thanks to the Dutch sailors. The socalled “Chinese mastiffs” quickly gained popularity among representatives of the highest classes. The breed soon spread throughout Europe. English breeders have done significant breeding work, resulting in animals that are more compact and muscular, but compared to today’s still more refined, with long limbs and a muzzle.

In the 19th century, pugs of Chinese origin were again brought to Britain, the distinguishing features of which were short stature, squatness and short muzzles. They were mixed with the European subspecies, which was the beginning of the appearance of individuals of the modern type.

In our country, representatives of the pug breed appeared in the XVII-XIX centuries. After the revolution, their number decreased, but enthusiasts were able not only to maintain it, but also to bring it to the world level. Now even foreigners buy puppies from Russian breeders. In the world, the breed is considered one of the most beloved and famous.

Widely planted eyes are large and convex, the color of the iris is dark. The jaw is a wide, correct bitedense snack (incisors of the lower jaw are located in front of the upper cutters). The ears are small, there are different shapes, the “button” is preferable, when the hearing organ in the form of a triangle hangs on cartilage and completely closes the auditory passage. The case is massive, the chest is wide. The limbs are straight and powerful. The short tail is planted high and twisted into the ring.

The wool is short, thick, smooth and soft. The color is beige, black, apricot and silver. Light wool should contrast with dark ears and “mask”. A dark strip along the back and the same shade is also permissible for a rhomboid stain on the forehead.

    Care

The most important part of the care of pugs is regular cleaning of the folds on the muzzle. It is necessary to monitor their condition very carefully, since it is here that bacteria and fungi most often develop. Due to the specific structure of the skull, pugs are prone to various eye diseases, and may also have breathing problems. You need to make sure that the dog does not overwork, and do not let it overheat. However, it is also harmful for pugs to lead a sedentary lifestyle, as they tend to be overweight. According to the standard, representatives of this breed should have well-developed muscles. It is also important to note that the future owner of the pug must be prepared for the fact that dogs of “short-faced” breeds snore very loudly. Pugs need to be brushed weekly as they shed a lot. For this reason, they should not be given to people with allergies.

    Conditions of detention

Due to breathing problems, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room in which the pug is kept so that it does not feel stuffy, and monitor the temperature. In rooms with high humidity, representatives of this breed feel bad.

    Predisposition to disease

    The most common diseases include:

  • allergic reactions.
  • Hip dysfunction. Accompanied by muscle atrophy and lameness.
  • Urolithiasis disease. Due to metabolic disorders, stones form in the organs of the urinary system.
  • Eye diseases: cataracts, glaucoma, conjunctivitis.
  • Obesity. Occurs due to an improperly formulated diet and feeding forbidden foods.
  • For a long life and maintaining the health of the pet, the owner must develop and observe a diet, monitor its condition and regularly visit the veterinarian.
