The Chartreuse is one of the most famous French cats. At various times, she was also called the “smiling cat of France”, “monastery cat”, “cat from the roofs of Paris” and even “potatoes on toothpicks”. Chartreuse received her last comic nickname for her body structure: a dense muscular body and fairly short legs.

These cats have long ceased to be just pets, they are the real symbols of France. The first mention of the Chartreuse breed dates back to the 16th century. There are two versions of the origin of the breed name. According to the first, cats were used by Carthusian monks to protect food supplies from rodents. Moreover, they guarded the ingredients for the manufacture of the famous Chartreuse liqueur.

The second theory says that the cats were named after the woolen fabric of the same name, which was supplied to France from Spain. In the books of monks until the XVII century there are no references to cats, therefore, most likely, the breed was still named after the fabric-for the softness and tenderness of the wool.

Initially, cats came to France from Syria, most likely along with merchant ships. Animals quickly gained popularity among ordinary people, and a little later, aristocrats also appreciated the breed. For example, General Charles de Gaulle had a Chartreuse cat named Gris-Gris. They say that the pet was so smart that he immediately won the heart of the general, a great dog lover.

Carthusian cats will not meow heart-rendingly for the whole house, they generally prefer silence. Owners especially revere the breed for its calm disposition. Despite this, chartreses are quite playful, besides they are beautiful hunters. Pets of this breed are very independent and independent, they will follow the owner, but prefer to always stay away. Their love is unobtrusive.
