The Vendée Basset Griffon is a hunting breed bred in France in the 19th century. There are two varieties of it: large and small Vendee griffons, they differ from each other only in size. This hardy messenger, despite the short paws, is able to pursue even a quick deer for a long time.

The Vendée Basset Griffon has a calm nature, but he is not alien to the love of fun and entertainment, which makes this breed very popular. The character of these dogs can be compared in strength to their incredible endurance: Basset Griffons are self-confident, balanced, sociable, love to work.

However, despite the calm disposition, dogs of this breed are not recommended for beginners. Basset Griffons are very intelligent, but stubborn and independent dogs, so they can sometimes be difficult to train. Only an experienced owner, who is familiar with training and ready to patiently and persistently train the pet, can cope with such a dog. You should start working with a pet from childhood, otherwise an untrained dog will be extremely naughty. For those who have already dealt with hunting breeds or breeds that require training, the Basset Griffon Vendée makes an excellent companion.

Thanks to their sociability and cheerful disposition, these dogs are great for families with school-age children. With proper socialization, Basset Griffons will get along well with other dogs. But with other pets, especially with rodents, care should be taken, because these dogs have a very developed hunting instinct.

Basset Griffons are very attached to their family, but they will always be able to keep themselves busy and will not suffer from separation while the owners are at work.

    Care

The Vendée Basset Griffon is a strong and hardy dog, but there are a number of diseases that they are most susceptible to. These include hereditary diseases of the eyes, ears, underactive thyroid, pancreatitis, and epilepsy.

The Basset Griffon’s coat needs to be brushed weekly. Long hair on the face that gets dirty when the dog eats or sniffs something requires extra care and more frequent washing. It is also important to monitor the cleanliness and condition of Basset ears, since the pinnae of dogs with floppy ears are more prone to infections than other breeds.

    Conditions of detention

This breed of dog needs a lot of exercise. For this reason, the Basset Griffon is best kept in a country house with its own plot.

These dogs are known for their escapism, which means that the new owner of the Vendée Basset Griffon should have a good fence. If you are sure that you can provide the dog with the necessary loads, then you can get it in a city apartment.
