The history of the origin of the breed Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is very unusual. For a long time, these dogs were bred in the USA not for exterior qualities, but exclusively for working. Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are excellent rat-catchers. Initially, they worked at the docks and on farms, and it was the destruction of these rodents that was the main purpose of these small and fearless dogs. The origins of the breed were emigrant dogs brought from the UK. She has the blood of Manchester Terriers, Bull Terriers, Beagles, Whippets. There is also evidence that white English terriers that have disappeared today have also been used.
Although these small nimble dogs were displayed for about 100 years, serious breeding with the selection of the exterior and type began relatively recently, and the breed standard was approved in 1999. At the same time, these terriers owe their unusual name to one of the US presidents Theodore Roosevelt, who is considered a great lover of dogs.
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are small, well-muscled dogs. The ideal ratio of body length to height at withers is described by the standard as 10:7–10:8. These dogs have short legs. The head of these terriers is small and proportional, with a slightly pronounced stop and approximately equal length of the muzzle and skull. At the same time, the skull is quite wide, but the shape of an apple is considered a disadvantage. Ears are triangular, set high and erect.
The standard also considers the excess weight of dogs that affects their mobility, dexterity and, accordingly, working qualities. The coat of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is short and dense. Colors vary greatly, but white background or markings are required. Teddy Roosevelt Terriers can be black, chocolate, dark brown, various shades of red, including red-red. Also blue and fawn.
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are friendly, outgoing and fun dogs. They are ready to actively participate in the life of the owners and will be happy to hunt and run after the ball in the garden. Thanks to their intelligence, these little terriers are well trained, but they need a firm hand: like all terriers, they are headstrong and stubborn.
Standard care comb out the coat, if necessary, clean the ears and trim the nails. It is important not to overfeed: these animals are prone to gaining excess weight.
Typical representatives of the breed are very unpretentious. Due to its sizes, they can be contained both in a private house and in a city apartment. However, keep in mind that these are very active dogs who definitely need to throw out their indefatigable energy. Also, do not forget about the strong hunting instinct of Teddy Roosevelt Terriers, thanks to which they can start chasing, for example, a neighbor’s cat, poultry or squirrels in the park.
It is not easy to buy such a puppy, they are mainly bred in the USA. Accordingly, you will have to organize a trip and delivery, which will double or triple the cost of the baby.
