The territory of the United States lies in almost all climatic zones: from Arctic to subequatorial. Only one of them is missing equatorial. Arctic (polar) zone falls on the small northern part of Alaska. Its continental part, as well as most of the Labrador Peninsula, are in the subarctic zone. The main part of the country’s territory lies in the temperature zone. And the southern states are in the subequatorial belt, including Alabama, New Mexico, California. The tropical climatic belt has its effect on the Mexican Highlands, Hawaii, the southern part of Florida and the California Peninsula. The islands of the Caribbean fall into the subequatorial belt.

The climate of the United States of America is very diverse largely due to an impressive territory that passes almost all climatic zones and has various “neighbors” in the form of mountain chains and oceans.

In the northeast of the country (the states of Maine, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Michigan and others), a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal temperature changes has been formed. Wet subtropical climate is characteristic of the territory of the States Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and nearby. Winter here is quite warm, without frosts and, in principle, without negative air temperatures, and the summer is very hot.

The semidisdain zone is characteristic of the West of the country (Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Northern and South Dakota, Colorado, and so on). Summer in this territory is arid, and winter is warm and comfortable. The imposed climate is characteristic of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, partly California. It is here that most of the US deserts are located. In summer, the air temperature reaches high values ​​(up to 45 ° C), and precipitation is rare.

The Mediterranean climate prevails in the west of California and provides comfortable air temperatures in any season. Precipitation falls mainly in the autumn and winter periods. The tropical wet climate provides in Florida very warm and moisturized air in the summer and dry warm in winter. This was the reason for creating the main part of the resorts in this part of the country. Hawaii also lie in the tropics zone, but here it is always hot and there is no dry winter.

The Alpine climate dominates in the highlands of the rocky mountains and some other areas of the Cordillera. Alaska is mainly characterized by marine climate.

The impact of air masses on the climate of the USA

The US climate, among other things, has a strong influence of the formation and movement of air masses. Over the continent during the year in certain seasons, Arctic, moderate, tropical air masses migrate. At the same time, the masses formed over the oceans carry a lot of moisture to the continent, and the continental, on the contrary, are dry and contain a lot of dust.

The influence of the ocean on the climate

US territory borders several oceans. The Pacific Ocean washes the western coast of the country, the Atlantic the eastern, and the Arctic in the north is adjacent to Alaska. The proximity of the ocean determines the high degree of humidification of air directly in the coastal areas. This is the most expressed in the north-west of the United States in the States of Washington and Oregon. A typical marine climate was formed here with a fairly soft winter and cool summer, as well as yearround precipitation.

Ocean currents also play an important role in the establishment of climate in certain coastal sections of the country. The Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean has a warm effect on the western coastal part of the United States. The Alaskan course warms the water of the north-eastern part of the Pacific and helps to increase the air temperature in the south and southwest of Alaska. And the California and Labrador movements, on the contrary, have a cooling effect on the climate of the coasts.

Mountain systems and climate formation

The relief of North America has a significant impact on the formation of climate on the mainland and in the United States in particular. In the West there is a mining system of the Cordillera, which prevents the passage of air masses from the Pacific Ocean. These masses only affect the relatively small coastal zone in front of the mountains, and they practically do not penetrate the mainland.

The Apapalachi mountains rise in the east of the continent do not create serious obstacles to the penetration of the air masses from the Atlantic. The plain area in the central part of North America provides the seasonal passage of tropical masses from south to north and Arctic from north to south.

Natural disasters

It has even become some sad business card of the country. Tornadoes arise in different places, but often in the states of Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri. Another destructive spontaneous trouble is hurricanes. The strongest squall winds often collapse to the eastern shore of the country, Hawaiian islands and states near the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane season lasts a very long time: from June to December. Sometimes, due to hurricanes, floods may occur. In some mountainous areas where rains can quickly fill the local canyon, water can quickly rise several meters. This causes flooding and landslides, leading to destruction.

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are also a fairly frequent phenomenon for the United States, since the Pacific volcanic fire ring passes right along the west coast of North America. Therefore, there are frequent and tsunami.

Forest fires a quite common phenomenon for the warm period of the year. Most of all they are subject to the state of the state of California.

US geography is extremely diverse. On its territory there are extensive sections of hot deserts, mountainous areas, sea coasts, tropical beaches. And each region has its own completely different climate, dry or humid, marine or continental.
