The ancestor of the velsteraera is considered no longer existing black and fan-fingered terrier, which was bred by the Wales farmers since the 16th century. Dogs helped people on the hunt, defended the house and even exterminated small rodents. It was a universal breed that combined security and hunting qualities. It is believed that the first club of lovers of velsteraelers appeared in 1886. From that time on, pure breeding began. By the way, despite the external resemblance to the Herdeliers, the Wales dogs differ from them with character and habits.
