What the hare eats in nature | What hares eat in the forest in winter and summer

The hare is a fur mammal from the Zaitsshaped detachment, feeding on grass and living almost anywhere in the planet. Its varieties can easily be found even in the steppes or on deserted, almost lifeless, territories. And, based on the variety of habitats, each of the types of this family adapts to them in its own way.

But one of this large detachment has a common – All hares of herbivorous animals. Seeking food and running away from predators, hares, who do not equip permanent places of the lie, spend a lot of energy and move all the time. It is this factor that determines what the hare feeds on – adjusted for the time of the year and the environment.

A variety of species

Representatives of science are still debating regarding the number of types of this family: some say that there are about 32 species, others that include the family and rabbits, argue about 45 varieties.

In our country, 4 types of these animals can be distinguished:

  • whitish;
  • hare;
  • Tolai;
  • Manchurian.

In the wild, this mammal consumes almost any plants that can find. It is clear that in the warm season there are no special problems with this, since there are enough food everywhere everywhere – Clover, sour and much more. And for this purpose, hares have a perfectly developed sense of smell – After all, they feed mainly in the dark.

Before you understand what hares eat, it is necessary to determine that they usually live. Belyaks are usually found in forests and tundra zone (with ponds and meadows, of course). He likes to choose places near agricultural territories. It is here that they easily find food. But the Russians, on the contrary, prefer open places – Fields and steppes. In the forest, they are grouped near open spaces.

Food of hares

Hares full of vegetarians – Their usual diet is grass, shoots, berries – and even what they can find on agricultural land. Of course, in the summer they prefer to stay away from people.

Hares do not prefer some specific type of food – They are happy to select everything they find in the forest or other habitat. They easily eat even toxic plants if necessary – For example, the same liveliness.

The story familiar to many in fairy tales that these rodents adore cabbage is a complete myth – like those hedgehogs eat apples, and mice cannot live without cheese. Hares with great pleasure will live cereal in the fields, or the same potatoes or beets.

Food Zaitsev in the warm season

Places of fatty hares common in the middle lane of Eurasia can be classified depending on the habitat:

  • Belyaks love to eat tiny meadows, thickets of small shrubs or ravines.

Based on this, their usual diet in the summer is formed by forest plants: from hare cabbage to yarrow or berries and even some types of mushrooms.

  • Tolas usually hunt in open areas. Therefore, the basis of their diet I make up plants that grow in such conditions: horse sorrel, wormwood, tubers and bulbs.
  • Rusaki can feed even next to the outskirts of settlements – Their diet is dandelions, clover and other wild types of herbs.

These rodents willingly consume sunflower, cereal crops – And everything that grows in the gardens.

Food Zaitsev in the cold

These rodents with developed incisors are able to find branches on the bushes in the most frost – And they eat them. Also, the necessary diet of hares at this time makes up the bark of deciduous plants containing all the necessary. They do not forget about the gardens, where they are lived in the remains after harvesting.

The same cabbage and carrots they manage to enjoy quite rarely – Especially in the cold – Therefore, their diet is those plants that are easier to get.

Usually since October these rodents have been consuming almost everything, becoming almost omnivorous. Trees bark, fields, distant hays – Everything goes into business. And in snowfalls animals remain in the lying, eating their droppings. Well, hare can eat dry grass, which is lined with a nest.

Depending on the species, hares in winter prefer:

  • Belyaks will not pass by the bark from any tree: from willow and maple to juniper and oak. Paws allow them to even dig grass out of snow.
  • Tolas are able to migrate in the case of high snow to places closer to settlements, uploading fields with food remnants.
  • Rusaki is a real problem for agricultural land in winter, gnawing trees. Their diet also includes seeds and even dry herbs.

Hares, like any other representatives of herbivores, usually have a problem with a deficiency of minerals and salts due to the diet. That is why often on the horns and bones of animals that fell in the forest, you can find traces of the teeth of these rodents. This is what experienced hunters usually use, luring their prey with salt water, watering its soil in the area of hunting.

Homeless food at home

Hares – These are animals that can be bred at home without any problems. At the same time, it is worth paying attention to the fact that with a similar content of rodents, their diet is almost impossible to bring closer to the natural.

The whole question is that young hares is difficult to feed – After all, the milk of these rodents has no analogues – Neither cow’s milk nor the mixture differ in fatness necessary for hares. Use other feed options – condensed milk go cow, flavored with cream, not the best idea – it can lead to a decrease in the livestock.

Feeding hares is required at least twice a day, in small portions (no more than 10 ml per reception).

These rodents begin to eat on their own only at the age of one month. Zaychats perfectly eat fresh grass, fruits, carrots and other vegetables, foliage of trees. Later you can introduce readymade feed – but they are worse absorbed and can cause discomfort.
